Frequently Asked Questions

Solar Basics

How much does solar cost?

Because every home is different you will need to receive a customized estimate for your home. Submit a request here to schedule an in-home evaluation. We have several $0 down financing options available to make it affordable.

How do I know if my home or roof is good for solar?

Each home is different. Please submit a contact request form and we can have a trainer energy advisor evaluate the feasibility of solar for your home.

What is net-metering?

Net metering is an arrangement with the local utility company that allows you to tie into their grid to get credits for excess energy generated from the solar panels. To find out more, watch our video about it here.

How long has CR Solar/eEquals been in business?

We started installing solar in 2016 in Utah and have since installed over 2,300 systems in Idaho, Missouri, Ohio, Minnesota, and Illinois.

What kind of solar panels do you use?

We use a variety of panel manufacturers due to supply chain disruptions, but each panel we use is Tier 1.

Can my HOA prevent me from going solar?

Illinois passed a solar access law that prevents homeowners associations from denying solar. That being said, if there are any architectural approval requirements in your HOA, it would be advisable to submit the required forms.

Do you have a referral program?

Yes, we do offer a referral program. Please contact your sales rep or email [email protected] for more information.

Will my roof support solar panels?

Before we install solar panels we do a structural review to evaluate if your roof can accommodate a solar array. If there are any known or existing issues please let us know ahead of time.

Will I still have a power bill once I have solar?

Going solar can save you thousands of dollars over time. Your system size, weather, season, and much more can affect how much power your system produces which would affect your overall bill. For grid-tied systems there is usually a $10-$20 monthly connection fee.

I have heard bugs and squirrels get in the wires. Do you offer critter guards?

We do offer critter guards as an additional service. Please reach out to your sales representative to discuss this.

What’s the status of my system installation?

Send an email to [email protected] and we’d love to give you an update. Please include your name and address we have on file.

What do I need to do the day of the install?

You will need to have someone 18 years or older present. We will also need access to the attic and main power panel.

After Install

How long does it take for my panels to get installed from point of sale to install?

We can install in most areas within 3-4 months from the point of sale. Please keep in mind that some areas have longer permit and approval timelines and can take up to 6 months due to local permitting requirements.

How long does the solar panel install take on installation day?

Installs take 1 to 2 days to complete (if the weather cooperates). Larger systems can take up to 3 days.

How do I know if my panels are working or not?

You can check for system status updates or monitor your solar production right from your smartphone. You will receive access to the app 1-2 weeks after the system is turned on.

How do I check on the status of a service request?

Send an email to [email protected] and we’d love to give you an update.

When do my payments start if I financed the system?

Every lender has different terms so please check with them to confirm. Typically lease payments start 30 days after your system is turned on (PTO). Financed payments start 60 days after installation.

After the install, how long does it take until the panels start working?

Post install the panels must pass local and utility inspections before we can turn them on (a.k.a. Energize or receive Permission to Operate). These inspections can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months depending on the jurisdiction. Because much of this process is out of our hands, please be patient with us as we work with your local government and the utility.

Do I receive a notification after the panels pass inspection?

After passing inspection you will receive a Permission to Operate letter (PTO) or email. Depending on the jurisdiction and power company this can take anywhere from between 4 weeks and 3 months. Please keep in mind that an unprecedented amount of homes are going solar and there is a significant bag log of approvals for the local jurisdictions and utility companies to approve.

Can I turn the system on before having approval/PTO?

Please wait for permission to operate from your utility before turning the system on. The utilities may lock your system and/or delay approval if they see that you’re producing too early.

Can I change out system parts myself if issues arise and fixes need to be made?

Please do not do any work on your system. This would invalidate the service warranty on that product.

Will my system produce electricity if the power goes out?

Due to safety requirements from the utility, your system will not produce electricity when the power goes out. If you chose to purchase and install additional equipment, such as batteries or generators, then your system would produce even when the power goes out on the grid.

What do the lights on my inverter mean?

A solid green light means you are producing power. A blue light means that your system is communicating with servers. For any other lights, please contact [email protected].

Can I add more panels to my system later?

You certainly can! We strive to provide you with a system that will provide you with the most savings for you, but you can definitely add more panels later if anything changes. Send us an email and we’d love to discuss your options.
